Eastgate Drive Water Main & Roadway Improvements

Project Overview

EastgateDrive.jpg

The Eastgate Drive Improvements project focuses on upgrading the water main, improving roadway conditions, enhancing pedestrian safety, and addressing drainage issues. Key components include:

  1. Water Main Replacement:

    • Installation of an 8-inch water main along Eastgate Drive from Webster Street to Algonquin Road.

    • Replacement of old, undersized 6-inch cast iron pipes that have experienced five breaks in 15 years.

    • New ductile iron pipes will meet fire flow and distribution demands, minimizing disruption during construction.

  2. Roadway Resurfacing:

    • Full-depth pavement restoration at areas disturbed during water main installation.

    • 2 ¼” mill and asphalt resurfacing for the rest of the roadway.

  3. Parking and Pedestrian Improvements:

    • Addition of 22 angled on-street parking spaces near the library.

    • Enhanced mid-block pedestrian crossing with flashing beacons, shortened crossing length, high-visibility markings, and a wider crosswalk.

  4. Sidewalk Enhancements:

    • New 5-foot-wide sidewalk on the east side, pulled back from the curb to create a turf buffer for pedestrian safety.

    • Connection from Webster Street to Algonquin Middle School property.

  5. Drainage Improvements:

    • Safety and erosion improvements at the southern project limits to protect the sidewalk and reduce future erosion.

Timeline

  • Construction starting the week of March 10th

  • Water main work will occur from mid-March to mid-May

  • Once water main work is completed, roadway work will occur from mid-May to mid-July

FAQ

20231023_114835.jpg

Q1: Why is the water main being replaced?
The existing 6-inch cast iron water main is 68 years old, undersized, and prone to breaks. Replacing it with an 8-inch ductile iron pipe will meet fire flow demands and improve reliability.

Q2: Will the project disrupt water service?
Disruptions will be minimized to approx. 2 hours by keeping the existing main active during the installation of the new main on the west side of Eastgate Drive. Notification will be provided 48 hours in advance of any service disruption.

Q3: What roadway improvements are included?
The road will receive full-depth pavement patches where disturbed, and a 2 ¼” asphalt resurfacing elsewhere.

Q4: Why are the new angled parking spaces being added?
Twenty-Two angled spaces near the library will provide convenient public parking.

Q5: What pedestrian safety upgrades are being made?
Improvements include flashing beacons, shorter crossing lengths, high visibility crosswalk markings and a turf buffer between sidewalks and traffic.

Q6: Why is the sidewalk being relocated only on the east side?
The west side would require private property acquisition and tree removals, while the east side had available public property to accommodate the changes with minimal impact.

Q7: How will drainage issues be addressed?
Improvements at the south end of project limits will stabilize the sidewalk and reduce future erosion.

Q8: When will the project be completed?
Specific timelines will be provided as the project progresses. Stay updated by signing up for email project updates!

Q9: Who can I contact with additional questions?
Please contact the Village Public Works Department for more information.
